This poem was written for Carol Ann Duffy’s Feminine Gospels anthology. In all talk shows, political shows, News broadcasts, Parliament shows, everyone (including the EU) wants a deal, and everyone discusses the need for negotiating a deal with the EU, however, one would wonder why they won’t actually just go and negotiate for a deal. After the initial two lines there are three more stanzas, two of 11 lines and a final one of 6.

Carol Ann Duffy then takes us back to envision a different future for this young man, and all the others. This, however, is 8 years after the poem’s publication, but perhaps could be a reflection on the nature of Parliament.The structure of Parliament is one long stanza, with free verse, and enjambments in random places. Duffy personifies history into a single woman, this woman being mistreated and left alone in her old age.

This COULD be Duffy’s message of the poem: The environment is a huge concern, but nothing is actually being done about it, and politicians/humans, while they look/sound good, and have meetings, are ineffective at tackling world issues.The fact that birds specifically are featured in this poem could be a representation of human traits.
