Evangelista Torricelli, an Italian mathematician and scientist, questioned that assumption, and proposed that the air had weight, and that it was the weight of the air (not the attractive force of the vacuum as many thought) which held (or rather, pushed) up the column of water. Torricelli filled a four-foot long glass tube with mercury and inverted the tube into a dish. He led Italy, and then the world beyond, to resolve a two-thousand-year-old philosophical debate about vacuum and the nature of space. We have been using Torricelli’s barometers as pressure reference standards for the best part of 400 years.
