It was even more moving than the previous "Sweetness in Forgetting", which I loved too. This book has it all. Even more frustrating was the plot line in which one character (who was a young white woman born in the south in the 1920s) was mysteriously, unusually kind to a young black boy to the point of putting herself in harm's way. Kristen Harmel unfolds the past along side the present, to show the power of love, abandonment, and forgiveness in a haunting story that made me cry and search my own heart for ways the past has colored today.
