Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett has lashed the AFL with fresh claims his club’s shut-out from the AFLW is “discriminatory”.Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett has claimed it is “discriminatory” that his club has been shut out of the AFLW.The high-profile club boss on Tuesday night told the Hawthorn Annual General Meeting league bosses have discriminated against his club because it remains one of four AFL clubs without representation in the AFLW.The flourishing women’s competition will expand to 14 teams next year when Gold Coast, Richmond, St Kilda and West Coast join the league.Only Sydney, Hawthorn, Essendon and Port Adelaide remain without a team — and with the talent pools already stretched there are no plans for further expansion in the immediate future.Kennett stuck his nose up at the competition when Hawthorn initially declined to submit a bid for an AFLW team for the inaugural season in 2017.But, after a dramatic change of heart, he now says it is “discriminatory’ that his club has missed the boat.“I find it discriminatory that we have not been given the opportunity to be included in the AFLW thus far,” Hawthorn CEO Justin Reeves said last year the club aimed to have the best women’s football operation in Australia, despite its team being in the VFLW.The AFL is reportedly set to adopt a reduced 15-minute half time break next season.Despite widespread criticism from fans towards the proposal, The development comes after the league first put forward a proposal for a 10-minute break that would have slashed the half time period in half.League officials reportedly believe the proposal has the support of broadcasters because the existing 20-minute break loses up to 20 per cent of its audience during half time. The report claims the proposal also has the support of many club officials and high profile players, including Geelong captain Joel Selwood.Carlton insists it doesn’t owe cut draft pick-up Josh Deluca anything after his mid-season move to the Blues ended sourly.Deluca moved from Perth to be with the Blues in 2019, but was cut just a few months later when the club announced its delistings and list management decisions following October’s Trade Period.Deluca revealed he was “pretty devastated and shocked” to hear he had fallen out of favour at the Blues. He said the Blues had been “pretty reassuring” that he would remain at the club beyond his six month contract with the club.Carlton football boss Brad Lloyd responded to Deluca’s comments this week during the club’s online member forum — suggesting the club never suggested it could guarantee Deluca a spot on the roster beyond 2020.“When we draft a player we always look at it as a long-term decision hoping they will be at the club as a long-term player,” Lloyd said.“Josh was no different to this and we drafted him with this in mind. "Prior to the industry shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we [Essendon] wrote to Steve Hocking [AFL football operations boss] to seek clarity about the AFL's future expansion plans for the national women's competition," Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell told "Clearly our industry has been presented with significant challenges, but we are committed to women's football at the elite AFLW level and we are keen to get clarity on what timelines around entry into the competition look like sooner rather than later. Hawthorn CEO Justin Reeves said last year the club aimed to have the best women’s football operation in Australia, despite its team being in the VFLW.
