We recorded a bit different mileage (11.4 miles round trip). When we hiked it, there had just been rain and the rocks were very slick. Snow on the top, watch your steep particularly coming down. There are lots of rocks on this trail and for a regular hike they present no problem hiking up and over but they take a toll on your knees going down. It was 4.1 from the Boy Scout camp to the junction of Cold Mountain Trail, and then another 1.6 miles to the top of Cold Mountain. The author based the book on the Civil War service of William P. Inman, Twenty-fifth North Carolina Infantry Regiment. If you are looking for a physical challenge with rewarding views at the summit, this fits your bill. I almost missed the survey marker at the peak. The volumes in Entry 204 that record oaths of allegiance, however, reveal that Inman signed his oath in Knoxville, Tennessee, in the office of Brigadier General Carter. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. But Shining Rock Wilderness is one of the best areas around western North Carolina and Cold Mountain offers great views. I'm definitely going to invest in some trekking poles after this. Beautiful hike through Pisgah, and great views from Cold Mountain. Having said all that, if you are an older hike and in shape (strong regular hiker with lots of miles in the book) the trip up is easier than going down. Cold Mountain is about southeast of Waynesville and south … You can keep muscles toned but joints are the enemy of old age! Inman deserted on September 5, 1862, twelve days before his regiment saw action at the Battle of Antietam, Maryland. Still in its natural state Cold Mountain, being in a National Forest, is still in pretty much the same state as it was during the U.S. Civil War. This was the second time Inman deserted from the Confederate army.
