'1900' is a gargantuan, multi-lingual, five-hour epic that has some inspired moments but for the most part spins its wheels. Dominique Sanda is OUTSTANDING in her beauty, her talent, emotion and sadness. You like to be depressed? I chose to. The rise of Fascism and the effects of its downfall. Similar To She could give Charlotte Rampling a run for her money. The epic tale of a class struggle in twentieth century Italy, as seen through the eyes of two childhood friends on opposing sides. It has it's faults, but Bertolucci made a true work of art (again) after his triumph with the equally phenoomenal Last Tango in Paris and his heartbreaking "loss of innocence" story The Dreamers.

It's an epic only by virtue of its length. Length in Italian, but long, over 2 DVDs.
I will gladly watch any foreign movie in any language with subtitles, even when I do not know the original language at all. The films scope is writ on a large canvas, well directed by B. Bertolucci, starring Robert De Niro, Gerard Depardieu, Donald Sutherland, Burt Lancaster, Sterling Hayden-1977, new print 2005. although, Sutherland is particularly good at it, when he is always said to be the nicest actor you could ever work with.
