Whether you use the term “nouthetic” or “biblical” counseling, Jay Adams was the man who got the whole project started with his first book on counseling, Competent to Counsel: Introduction to Nouthetic Counseling.

There are many fine books listed which biblical counselors should eventually read. A combination of these two disciplines, in particular, kept me from going off base when I began counseling and began to write about it.
